I taught all three of my children the basics of reading. They each had varying degrees of mastery before kindergarten. It is something I have enjoyed doing with them very much. It is amazing to watch their world open up to words as they learn. After I read my soon to be kindergartner her bedtime story, her new habit is to go back through the book and try to read it to herself. Exciting time!
